Tulare Public Library receives $25,000 grant for computers from AT&T Foundation
Staff reports • November 20, 2009
Tulare library officials have received a have received a $25,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation for computers in the new library.
Officials from Tulare Public Library
and the Tulare Library Foundation say the computers will be available for use in the Learning Center, which is part of the plans for the library being built at Cross Avenue and M Street.
The library is scheduled to open in June.
In the grant proposal, library officials said they planned to buy 10 laptop computers
, seven desktop computers, an LCD projector, a projector screen and a combined printer/copier.
“We were hopeful — it was something that we really wanted — but these situations are never a slam-dunk,” said librarian Mary-Catherine Oxford. “Of course, now we’re superexcited.”
The Learning Center will be a hub for adult literacy activities, job seekers, computer classes, homework assistance and other programs, library officials said.
The library will continue to be the home of Tulare READ, an adult literacy program, and other educational and cultural programs. The room will also be available for outside rentals, such as classes and seminars.
The grant proposal stated that the Tulare library would use the technology to keep at-risk teenagers interested in education and to keep them on track in life. That, Oxford said, is exactly how AT&T
appeared to want its money used.
“It seemed like a really great match,” Oxford said. She also said that being awarded a grant by a giant like AT&T usually leads to other grants — and Tulare has already applied.
The AT&T Foundation officials stated in a news release that the organization funded the grant as a “program to help students successfully complete high school and prepare them for college or the work force.”
The grant identified the target audience as nontraditional and underserved students.
The $14 million new library will also include a new Tulare City Council chambers
